Why Does America Love Skrillex? | Vulture

popculturebrain:

I ask myself this question every day.

Though I have lost taste for Skrillex and the whole brostep scene, nobody can criticize Sonny Moore’s ability to sell his product. It may not be the best music in the world, but it is what mainstream American culture can understand and what will sell the most records in the shortest period of time. It’s big, it’s angry, its aggressive, and it’s seemingly mindless, until you look deeper at Skrillex’s ability to create just the sound that people want to hear…

The question that this article raises for me is this: where will music go from here? Just as gabber birthed something bigger, is brostep destined to morph from its uninspired and redundant state into something that can actually be regarded with musical respect? I suppose only time will tell…
